Nokia 5210 Review

By Unknown | Tue 3rd, June 2008

Be Adventurous with the Nokia 5210

When you think about all those mobile phones out there that make the claim it's shock-proof, water-proof and dust-proof, the first thing that really comes to mind is the bulkiness and extreme weight of such a phone. Well, yes - you could say those are the trade-off factors if I was to choose a phone that comes with such insulation. But what if I just want a phone like everyone else's - where it may be all compactly designed with those groovy curves and "wow" phone features. Probably the only way is to buy another phone that just gives me what I want!

Nokia 5210But now there is an alternative. The new Nokia 5210 is a phone that tries to combine both durability, usability and styling into the one handset - thereby letting you use it whether you're just going to work, out with friends or playing hard. Weighing in at 92 grams, which is substantially lighter than phones that offer superior protection against the elements and accidents, the 5210 provides the friendly and standard Nokia user interface and features - plus some new ones as well.

One of the most noticeable things about the 5210 is the new cover design concept. The entire cover encompasses two sections - the top (earpiece and display cover) and the bottom (keypad area) - which snaps on together to coat the main phone unit. The original cover, Burned Orange, is the only colour sold as a 5210 sales package. Four other cover colours are available - and different top and bottom covers can be interchangeably swapped as they have a common fitting.

After opening up the 5210 box, the first thing I found about the phone was its weight - being somewhat lighter than other similar phone models that provide similar insulation. The 5210 used the same battery found on the 8000-series phones - which also contributed towards the overall light weight. The 5210's design, casing material and overall weight made holding the phone a comfortable experience.

The orange backlight is not amber in colour - but orange. The amount of illumination was very sufficient as it had a hint of white in it as well. Moving around the phone, the menus and functions were very much similar to any other Nokia phone. The buttons on the phones were not at all hard to press. Unfortunately, I found the phone's software to have a slight lag that may cause delayed reactions while using some of its functions (when playing a game, for example).

Some of the new and interesting features of the phone include the built-in WAP 1.1 browser, screen saver option (with one displaying a large digital clock display - very useful), timed profiles, concatenated SMS messages, rhythmic backlight and vibrate feature, - vibrate then ring feature -, automatic keyguard lock feature with added security feature, picture editor, built-in thermometer, and a Chinese Lunar Date feature.

By the way, we also tested the phone by bumping and soaking it. The phone was comfortable with both a rugged and hard flat surface where it made a slight bounce on each point of contact. Water was sprayed on it, and the phone was put under a running tap - no problems with insulation. The phone needed a good wipe after that though.
